Kentucky Adds Yet Another Band To The Ranks Of Having A Record Deal!
Edmonton, KY – I personally have been singing the praises of this young band to anyone that would listen for quite some time now. In fact, back in 2014, I reviewed their John Brim Tribute Album and covered their CD Release show. If you’d like to read those, you can find them on Unsung Melody here.
OTIS is a four-piece rock’n’roll band from the Edmonton and Glasgow areas of Kentucky. Their sound is sometimes compared to the Allman Brothers Band and while the guys appreciate the high praise, they’re quick to tell ya that, “We just sound like OTIS.” I think that’s what every band strives for. To share their influences, but be as original as they can be.
Btw, the Glasgow/Edmonton area is also home to Black Stone Cherry and of course the Grammy-winning unit in The Kentucky Headhunters. I’m honestly starting to think that there is something in the water down there on that end of the state. As another set of Grammy winners, Cage The Elephant, are also from nearby Bowling Green.
OTIS recently signed on with Cleopatra Records, who are based out of Los Angeles, California. Their roster is a diverse one, but one that certainly is sprinkled with names you have definitely heard. Bands or artists such as B.B. King, Bo Diddley, Bob Marley, Glen Campbell, Howlin’ Wolf, Johnny Winter, Little Richard, Rick Derringer, Yes and a host of other amazing artists.
I asked the band for a little perspective on their recent signing and what we can expect when they drop their new album, “Eyes Of The Sun”, on September 8th. Guitarist Steve Jewell had this to say, “We’re very excited to be signed with Cleopatra Records. Cleopatra Records have some great artists and bands on their roster. We’re in good company for sure.It is an honor to be able to say that we are now labelmates with so many legends.”
Jewell continues by giving a little insight about the makings of the new record, “We’ve worked hard on our new album Eyes of The Sun and we’re very proud of it. We were also happy to record with our friend David Barrick here in Glasgow, Kentucky and have him co-produce it. We were fortunate as well to have our Manager Paul Nelson fly down and be the Executive Producer on our album. Paul was Johnny Winter’s Manager for the latter years of Johnny’s career and also produced Johnny’s album “Step Back” that won a Grammy. So with our friend David, who is familiar with our sound, and with Paul’s expertise, we’re very pleased with the outcome of our new album. And we are definitely pleased with our album catching Cleopatra Records attention.”
Vocalist/Guitarist Boone Froggett added, “As the old saying goes miracles appear in the strangest of places…In the winter of 2014 Greg Martin (Kentucky Headhunters) and I had a chance meeting with Johnny Winter and Paul Nelson before Johnny’s performance in Owensboro, KY. Looking back now that was quite a cosmic moment. Here we are in 2017, and I never would have dreamed that Paul Nelson would be managing the band and helping our careers evolve to this point, but that’s the magic of music. Our new record “Eyes Of The Sun” is just the mojo of four guys in a room recording to tape. From that, our biggest hope is that we move people to open their hearts and minds and enjoy some good ole Kentucky Rock’n’Roll . So come September 15th go out there and get our record, come to a show and become part of the Otis Family. We love all our brothers and sisters!”
So there ya have it. Another group about to start a musical journey right here in Kentucky. I know all of us here at Capture Kentucky certainly wish them well!
